As a general observation, since the passage of Title IX more than 50 years ago, sport opportunities for girls and women in the United States have expanded considerably.  As instrumental as Title IX and other gender equity laws have been in promoting the growth of women’s sports, feminists and critical race scholars point out not all women have benefitted equally from the gains realized.  Title IX as a “single axis” law, a law that focuses on one category of bias when addressing discrimination, is not enough to fully address the experiences of Black women who work and compete in the U.S. college sport system who are impacted by both racism and sexism.  The focus of this panel will be on the barriers to participation and work that Black women encounter in the U.S. college sport system, the effects of racial clustering, the experiences of Black women athletes, coaches, and athletics administrators, and steps to promote gender and racial equity in the college sport space.
