The Manley and Doriseve Thaler Vocal Concert Series, established in 2019 to bring free concerts of world-class vocal performers to the Ithaca College community, presents an evening with tenor Lawrence Brownlee and pianist Kevin J. Miller, performing "Rising", their new program of songs set to poems of the Harlem Renaissance. One half of the concert consists entirely of new music by Black American composers commissioned specifically for the “Rising” project. The other half features art song cycles by Margaret Bonds, Jeremiah Evans, and Robert Owens.

“These past years have been a trial, both for humanity as a whole, and the African-American population here in the United States. But through all these many challenges we have faced, I have also seen moments of strength, inspiration, hope, and great beauty. It is those themes of uplift, elevation, and rebirth that we have tried to focus on with this new project Rising, taking poems from the giants of the Harlem Renaissance, and working with some of today’s most talented African-American composers, to create something that speaks not just to our struggles, but to our triumphs.” – Lawrence Brownlee

"With the debut of “Rising,” Brownlee is smartly applying his star power...to uplift music that might not otherwise be heard, and spread the names of composers on the verge of greater recognition...Time flew by...almost all the commissions are worthy of repeat performances by as many singers as will take them on" (The Boston Globe)

Brownlee will also give a master class at 7:00pm on Friday, March 31 in the Hockett Family Recital Hall.

Concert and master class are both, as always, FREE and open to the public, through the generosity of Manley and Doriseve Thaler.
