The Collado Award is presented to an Ithaca College faculty member who exemplifies President Emerita Collado’s vision of excellence in education, as demonstrated through an inclusive approach to educational practices of teaching, research, and/or leadership. In recognition of his dedication towards inclusion in many facets, this year’s award is given to Dr. Derek Adams, Associate Professor of Literatures in English. As one of his nominators remarked, “Derek’s teaching practices embody inclusivity, and he effectively fosters in his students a sense of belonging among a community of scholars.” Dr. Adams developed the “My Community” project, which invites students to make connections among their communities and recognize how they benefit their classrooms and Ithaca College. Reflecting on this experience, one student noted “As I continue in my own education and begin my career in academia, I aim to shape my classrooms in a community-oriented form based on the pedagogy of Dr. Adams.” His inclusive approach to teaching extends beyond our college campus, as Dr. Adams taught a college class in a maximum-security men’s prison through the Cornell Prison Education Program. Inclusivity and care are at the forefront of Dr. Adams’ advising practice. As one nominator stated, “It is a stunning thing to consider how many students have overcome feelings of isolation, loneliness, and disaffection because of Derek’s generous and gentle guidance.”
The President Shirley M. Collado Faculty Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Ithaca College Community is intended to support the professional development of the chosen faculty member to further enhance their capacity for equitable and inclusive leadership in all relevant academic and community areas. This $5000 award is made possible by a generous gift from Gloria Hobbs, Honorary Alumna & Trustee of Ithaca College.
Our sincere congratulations to the 2023 Collado Award recipient, Dr. Derek Adams.
