Professor Katharine Kittredge, Department of Literatures in English, recently published an essay, “But First There was a Scarecrow. . .” which looks at the evolution of the character of the Scarecrow in Frank L. Baum’s Wizard of Oz series, and its various transmedia adaptations including films, television, and YA titles. The essay was part of the anthology The Characters of Oz: Essays on Their Adaptation and Transformation (McFarland, 2023) edited by Ithaca alumnus Dina Schiff Massachi (IC 2005), a Lecturer at UNC Charlotte. Massachi is a leading authority in Oz scholarship; she has published numerous academic articles on Baum’s Oz and its various adaptations, created a popular video lecture series, and been a featured speaker at Oz conferences and conventions.
