September 11 Moment of Remembrance

By MaryAnn Taylor, September 8, 2023

Submitted on behalf of President Cornish:

Dear Ithaca College Community,

This coming Monday, as the nation commemorates the 22nd anniversary of the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001, Ithaca College’s Dillingham fountains will be lowered in memory of the lives lost and in honor of all those who were affected.

Six members of our Ithaca College family perished that horrific day, all at the World Trade Center. Their names are memorialized on a plaque near Muller Chapel Pond: Vincent Abate '83, Thomas Collins '87, Ronald Ruben '87, Steven Russin '91, Derek Statkevicus '93, and Johanna Sigmund, sister of John Sigmund '02. Next to the plaque is a Peace Pole, dedicated on the one-year anniversary of the attacks. It carries the phrase “May Peace Prevail on Earth” written in eight languages.

Whether at the Peace Pole, the fountains, or at a place of your choosing, please spend a few moments to recognize our nation's tremendous loss that day. Consider being of service to someone else, even just by offering a smile or a kind word. Our shared humanity brought us together on September 11, 2001.  May we continue to care for one another today and always.

In peace,
La Jerne Terry Cornish
President
