Conversations Across Screen Cultures, an online initiative featuring live interviews and discussions with film and media scholars, media artists, and programmers launches for the 2023-2024 academic year on October 10 at 7:00pm ET with Lauren Berliner, Associate Professor of Media & Communication Studies at University of Washington Bothell and Jaimie Baron, lecturer in Film and Media at UC Berkeley.
Lauren S. Berliner is an Associate Professor of Media & Communication Studies at University of Washington Bothell where she teaches courses in digital media studies and visual culture. She is the author of the book Producing Queer Youth: the Paradox of Digital Media Empowerment (Routledge 2018), co-editor of Feminist Interventions in Participatory Media: Pedagogy, Publics, Practice (Routledge 2018), and has published in such journals as Television & New Media, Feminist Media Histories, and JCMS. She is also an associate director of The Festival of (In)appropriation.
Dr. Jaimie Baron is a writer, editor, curator, and theorist. She is the author of two books, The Archive Effect: Found Footage and the Audiovisual Experience of History (Routledge, 2014) and Reuse, Misuse, Abuse: The Ethics of Audiovisual Appropriation in the Digital Era (Rutgers, 2020) as well as numerous journal articles and book chapters. She is the director of the Festival of (In)appropriation and co-editor of the Docalogue website and book series. She was a 2022 – 2023 recipient of a Harvard Radcliffe Fellowship. She currently lectures in Film and Media at UC Berkeley.
Conversations Across Screen Cultures is a collaboratively produced speaker series that creates space for dynamic conversations among screen studies scholars and practitioners. Sessions feature open discussion and dialogue between speakers and attendees. Begun by Patty Zimmermann during the pandemic lockdown, Conversations Across Screen Cultures honors Patty’s legacy by promoting connection and collaboration as critical modes for screen studies practice.
