This is a quick reminder that the New York State Fire Marshal will be on the Ithaca College campus for approximately 2-3 weeks starting this Thursday, October 19, 2023.
The Fire Marshal will be conducting inspections in all college owned or occupied properties and may enter dorm rooms and apartments including bedrooms, as well as office spaces, mechanical rooms, classrooms, and areas of public assembly. The Inspector will be accompanied by a representative from the Office of Public Safety’s Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) office, as well as a Residential Life representative in those buildings under their auspices. In most cases, a room or work area inspection takes less than 2 minutes, unless violations are found.
We would like to ask that all students, faculty, and staff, survey their areas with an emphasis on the common violations listed below and remove or remedy any situation that may pose a threat to start or contribute to the growth of a fire or prevent egress during an emergency.
- Wax candles are not permitted on campus. Battery operated are OK.
- Excessive clutter of combustible materials in dorm rooms or offices
- Fire and smoke doors blocked open or obstructed by materials.
- Extension cords are not allowed. The use of multi outlet power strips with a reset button are.
- The use of smoking products indoors is prohibited campus wide.
- The covering or tampering of smoke or heat detectors is always prohibited.
With your assistance in addressing any of these issues in your area, the inspection process should run smoothly, and the college should receive fewer violation notices, helping negate the need for a re-inspection of your space.
Thank you in advance for your assistance, and please feel free to contact the EHS office with any questions.
