MUNM 25600 Women in Popular Music (LA) examines the lives and contributions of women in popular American music after 1900, focusing on their role in society as well as the challenges they have faced in their professional and personal lives. The course focuses on women practitioners in blues, jazz, country, folk, rock, and contemporary pop music. We will study the development of American popular culture within its socio-political context. This course is designed for non-music majors, with no musical background necessary. The class will be offered remotely with synchronous class meetings.
