The Ithaca Music Forum will sponsor a talk by Dr. Crystal Peebles, Associate Professor of Music Theory, on the music of the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw. Dr. Peebles' talk, entitled "Gestural Analysis of Caroline Shaw's Entr'acte" will be take place on Friday, Dec. 1, at 5 pm in the Nabenhauer Recital Room in the Whalen Center for Music. This talk is free and open to the public, and will be followed by a reception.
Caroline Shaw's string quartets are physically evocative. When listening to her works, I find myself invited to dance along with the performative gestures and musical gestures. In this talk, I will analyze Shaw's Entr'acte through this lens of invited motion. Different qualities of movement define formal structures and create and embodied narrative of this piece.
