Come hear and cheer on the accomplishments of our first-year students as they present their final projects for Introduction to Music Studies (MUTH 111)—an inaugural course launching the new curriculum for all music majors and minors. In stations all around the Dillingham Theater lobby, students will present their analyses of their chosen music and genre. We’ll learn about hip-hop, rap, be-bop, free jazz, samba, salsa, bossa nova, Sondheim musicals, modern musicals, classic rock, math rock, folk, country, and much more! Students will discuss the social and cultural contexts of their genre and how it impacts its sounds—including its textures, timbres, rhythms, meter, melodies, harmonies, and forms. Over 100 students working in small groups that alternate throughout the event will present in simultaneous poster sessions, about 15 stations around the lobby. It will be quite a party! Feel free to pop in for a quick visit or immerse yourself in the full cornucopia of student work. Come enjoy some wonderful music and celebrate the accomplishments of our first-year musicians!
