Perusall is a social e-reader that facilitates collaborative annotation around text (and other media). Social annotation is reading and thinking together. Instructors can upload PDF files, Word documents, ePub book files, source code files, web pages or publisher content and assign it to students.  Students can read the materials, take private notes, and collectively annotate and discuss the text with comments, questions, analysis, and responses.   Perusall saves the instructor time by using machine learning to grade students’ engagement for low-stakes assessment or accountability.  The new Canvas integration makes the set-up process much smoother than in the past. The purpose of this session is to provide an overview of this tool and strategies for using it so instructors can decide whether to use it in their courses.
