What does the search committee do?
The search process for a higher education position, such as hiring a new director, involves several stages and requires a significant time commitment. Here are some key steps:
- Discussing and identifying key qualities and qualifications needed in the new director.
- Establishing criteria to evaluate applications.
- Reviewing applications, resumes, and cover letters of candidates.
- Meetings to discuss and assess each candidate's suitability based on established criteria.
- Conducting initial interviews to further assess candidates.
- Participating in subsequent rounds of interviews to identify finalists.
- Inviting finalist candidates for on-campus visits.
- Planning and coordinating interviews, presentations, and interactions with the campus community.
- Meetings to discuss feedback from campus visits.
- Identifying whether or not each candidate is hirable, and submitting a list of their strengths and weaknesses.
Committee members can expect to dedicate several hours per week throughout the search process. The overall process will take several months. It's crucial for committee members to commit to active participation in meetings, thoughtful consideration of candidates, collaboration with other members, and keeping confidentiality, to ensure a successful and inclusive search process.
