Academic Concerns vs. ICare Referrals

As we begin a new semester and we reconnect as a campus, you may notice that you know a student who is struggling. The Office of ICare and Student Support and The Center for Student Success wanted to share more information on when to submit an Academic Concern vs. when to submit an ICare Referral.

The following are examples of when to complete an Academic Concern form. A student may meet with their dean's office or a professional success coach.

  • Infrequent attendance or completely stopped attending class.

  • Non-communicative behavior or not responding to email/outreach attempts.

  • Decline in grades.

  • Difficulty managing course load, missing multiple assignments or major assignments (papers/exams)

  • Exhibiting disruptive classroom behavior (i.e. argumentative, confrontational, harassing).

Below are examples of concerns that are best addressed through the ICare process. For more examples, please visit our "Should I Submit an ICare Referral?" webpage.

  • Emotional and mental health concerns.

  • Difficulty getting connected to resources on or off campus.

  • Disclosure of non-academic stressors.

  • Concerning social behaviors.

Please note that the ICare team establishes a plan for outreach based on the severity of the concerns presented. A student may meet with a Care Manager in the Office of ICare and Student Support or a Residential Life professional staff member.
