SUBJECT: Opera Ithaca Presents a unique horror-opera!
Opera Ithaca continues to produce interesting and daring opera as exemplified in the final opera of the season-The Turn of the Screw. This exciting piece has a unique place in opera history as it is one of few in the operatic horror genre. The opera is adapted from a novella by the legendary American-British author Henry James and composed by Benjamin Britten, with a libretto by Myfanwy Piper.
The Turn of the Screw is a mysterious ‘haunted house’ story. It centers on two parentless children, Miles and Flora, and their unnamed Governess, who is convinced that the children are being menaced by ghosts. It is never entirely clear whether the children can see the spirits, or if the Governess is imagining them. The tragic ending of the opera is colored by the same ambiguity.
A stellar cast features many talented members of the Ithaca College community including alumni Lynn Craver ’96, MM ‘14 as the Governess; current IC students Emma Commisso ‘24 as Flora and Wyatt McDaniel ‘26 as Miles. Bringing this work to life are Stage Director, Susannah Berryman, retired IC Associate Director of Theatre Arts; Conductor Kristin Ditlow, long-time IC staff pianist; and Scenic Designer Norman Johnson, IC Professor Emeritus of Theatre Arts. The cast also features soprano Celeste Morales as Mrs. Grose; tenor Gabriel Hernandez as Peter Quint; soprano Rachel Blaustein as Miss Jessel.
The Turn of the Screw will be performed April 19 and 21, 2024, at The Hangar Theater. Experience this unique and magical show with us! Tickets may be purchased online at operaithaca.org.
