The Ithacan won the Corbin Gwaltney Award for Best All-Around Student Newspaper (Small) in the Society of Professional Journalists' Region 1 Mark of Excellence Awards 2023 at the SPJ Region 1 conference Saturday at Emerson College in Boston.
Junior Lorien Tyne won the new Regional Political Coverage category for her piece "Successful write-in campaign stirs conversation about Ithaca's political climate."
Sophomore Prakriti Panwar won the In-Depth Reporting (Small) category for her piece "Experiences of BIPOC students in performing arts reveal patterns of discrimination at Ithaca College." Caitlin Holtzman '23 was named a finalist in the same category for her story "Ithaca College community questions Yellow Deli and Twelve Tribes presence."
Sophomore Ray Milburn, who represented The Ithacan at the conference, was named a finalist in the Sports Writing (Small) category for his story "The center at center stage: Football player shares his passion for performance."
SPJ's Region 1 consists of organizations based in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Central and Eastern Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.
Region 1 winners will compete in the national competition among all 12 regions.
