On Saturday, April 20, 2024, the Society of Professional Journalists announced the winners and finalists in the 2023 SPJ Region 1 Mark of Excellence Awards competition. The announcement was made during the SPJ Region 1 Conference at Emerson College in Boston, MA. Ithaca College Television (ICTV) and WICB were recognized for outstanding broadcast journalism, news and sports coverage.
The awards were won in the following categories:
Television In-Depth Reporting
Finalist: "ICTV Reports: Drag performers create community in small cities"
Grant Johnson '25 (ICTV)
Radio Sports Reporting
Finalist: "Big Game Update 2-9-2023"
Nicholas Lubrano '23, Matthew Sosler '23, Jayden Becker '23 & Dane Richardson '23 (WICB)

SPJ's Region 1 includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Central and Eastern Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. The competition's first-place winners will compete at the national level among other MOE winners from the 12 SPJ regions. National winners will be notified in late spring.
