Using math to solve real-world problems in the COMAP Mathematical and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling

Please join us for a talk with Prof. Ted Galanthay, Dept. of Mathematics and Earth Sonrod, B.S. Mathematics `25

How can you apply math? What is it like to work on a team to solve a real-world problem? The annual COMAP Mathematical and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling is like a hackathon for students from any major who like to solve problems. Students who have taken two semesters of Calculus and are interested building their resumes while developing marketable skills can successfully contribute to the team’s efforts to solve one of six open-ended problems in areas such as mathematical biology, climate and sustainability, sport psychology, economic policy, and more.

Come and listen to senior Earth Sonrod explain how last year’s COMAP team created and applied a mathematical model to study the evolution of the sex ratio in sea lampreys. Listen to Professor Ted Galanthay outline how math could be used to solve the other five problems.
