From Classroom to Career: How Math, Finance, and Computer Science Shape Data Science in the Fin-Tech Industry

As a recent IC mathematics graduate, I’ll share how my education has shaped my career as a data scientist in the banking and fintech industries. This talk will explore how the "real- world" applications of mathematical concepts like probability, statistics, and linear algebra, and financial concepts such as valuation, net present value, and diversification, come together with coding in data science and machine learning. We’ll dive into how these skill sets drive innovation in areas like financial forecasting, risk modeling, and customer analytics. By bridging the gap between academic theory and industry practice, I’ll provide insights into how students can apply their own cross- disciplinary skills to create meaningful impact in the world of data science.

Additionally, Amy Huang from Career Services will be giving short 5-minute overview of services available through their office at the beginning of the talk, so students who are interested in thinking about their career will be connected to resources on campus.
