Gavin Dowell, Accounting Student, and Margaret Shackell use real world data on the NBA

Dowell & Shackell have developed a case that teaches students cost-benefit analysis and visualizations. The case has been chosen as the basis for the Institute of Management Accountant's student case competition this year.

The case for the 2025 Student Case Competition has been published in Strategic Finance and is now available on the IMA website. This year’s case, “NBA Player Acquisition: Cost-Benefit Analysis and Visualizations,” challenges students to use data to identify players who will round out their team’s roster and better their chances of bringing home an NBA championship ring. The competition will officially open later this month.
