Training for student journalists and editors

Threats against journalists are proliferating in the United States. In 2023, the U.S. ranked 45th on the World Press Freedom Index, down from 32nd just a decade ago.

Join this 90-minute online training specially designed ahead of election season for Ithaca College student journalists and news leaders. The webinar is hosted and facilitated by Jennifer Karchmer, an independent journalist and 1991 graduate of the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College, who is partnering with the International Women’s Media Foundation and the James Foley Foundation.

The webinar will also be open to students from a select group of institutions nationwide (i.e., University of Missouri, University at Albany, NYU, Marquette University, American University, Weber State, University of Oklahoma, Cornell University).

The training will cover: risk assessment and pre-planning, personal protective equipment, best practices for newsgathering at elections, rallies, and protests; awareness and understanding of police tactics during crowd control, police-press relations and more.

The webinar is free; registration is required. Maximum number of attendees is 50, so reserve your space early. The webinar is scheduled to be recorded and a replay will be available. You must register to receive the replay link.

Independent and freelance journalists, and journalism educators interested in attending can email Jennifer Karchmer with a request for registration: jenniferkarchmer@gmail.com.
