Safety Awareness Reminders and Resources for Ithaca College Students

By Elyse Nepa, October 11, 2024

Dear Campus Community,

The Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management has recently become aware of reports of Ithaca College students being exposed without their consent to drugs that cause intoxication or intensify intoxication, often uncontrollably.

The combination of drugs ingested with or without consent can lead to serious symptoms, including memory loss, drowsiness, slurred speech, and loss of consciousness. It's also important to note that combining alcohol with THC-based edibles can produce similar effects.

If you are drinking alcohol, please remember to do so in moderation. It is especially important to know and trust the source of alcohol and other substances. If the source is unknown, please dispose of the substance. It is also helpful to use the buddy system, so that you are always with a friend or group of friends in social situations.

We would like to remind our campus community of our Medical Amnesty Policy, which ensures that health, safety, and caregiving are prioritized without concern for repercussions for those who may have used or consumed alcohol or other substances.

Additionally, we encourage all students to download and use the Rave Guardian app to access on- and off-campus support and crisis resources, contact emergency response agencies, and utilize the safety timer when traveling to and from social events or gatherings.

We encourage anyone who needs support to connect with the resources and services available at Ithaca College, including those specific to sexual and relationship violence through Sexual Harassment and Assault Response & Education (SHARE) or the Prevention Education Network.

We urge all students, faculty, and staff members to be active partners in creating and maintaining a safer campus community where we all can flourish. If you have experienced any incidents like those mentioned in this message, or if at any time you experience a threatening or unsafe situation, please contact the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management immediately at 607-274-3333.
