Help Build Peace Studies at IC!

Dear Staff Colleagues,

The Provost's Office has recently approved the creation of a professional certificate program in peace studies at IC. The aim of the program is to enable students enrolled at IC and the wider community to study the underlying causes of and potential solutions to human conflicts around the world in an academically rigorous and experientially based manner.

While the details have yet to be fully fleshed out, the program coordinators, namely, EricSteinschneider (Associate Professor, Philosophy and Religion) and I, envision that students enrolled in the program will be awarded a certificate after taking several courses, attending a series of specially designed events, and participating in local peace building initiatives.

Additionally, we are excited that Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies has agreed to partner with us on this program, helping to facilitate cross-cultural and inter-religious dialogue on nonviolent conflict resolution, the imagining of sustainable futures, and the promotion of human flourishing.

We are currently seeking staff members who would be interested in working with us to design the program. We do not anticipate that this will be a major time commitment. However, we would like to schedule an in-person meeting sometime in the coming weeks to discuss the next steps. If you would be interesting in contributing, or have relevant questions or feedback, please let me know.

Reach out to me if you are interested ... ehowd@ithaca.edu.

Thanks for all you do!
