The Talar Transmission: Shifting the Focus of Chronic Ankle Instability

Dr. Jennifer McKeon, along with co-author, Dr. Patrick McKeon, presented “The Talar Transmission: Shifting the Focus of Chronic Ankle Instability” at the 10th International Ankle Symposium on October 4 in Strasbourg, France.

The talar transmission project is a model that the McKeons are proposing to further explain the “perception of giving way” that is commonly described by individuals with chronic ankle instability. Happily, it was well-received by ankle specialists from around the world! Jennifer also served as chair for the session “What a Fully Rehabilitated Foot-Ankle Complex Looks Like After Lateral Ankle Sprain?” for speaker Dr. Colin Griffin, a foot & ankle rehabilitation specialist from Ireland.

The authors propose that an incident of "giving way" may be a decoupling of the Proximal Unit or the Distal Unit (or a combination of both) caused by damage to the involved stabilizing structures. The "gears slip" leading to an episode of instability at the talocrural joint, the subtalar joint or both.
