In this two-credit spring seminar offered by Professor Eleanor Henderson in the Department of Writing, we will engage in a Slow Read of Narrative in the Anthropocene by Erin James (Ohio State University Press, 2022, 234 pp.). This work of econarratology poses two complementary questions: What can narrative teach us about our current geological epoch? and What can our current geological epoch teach us about narrative? Our inquiry will take up these questions, as well as this one: Can understanding the stories we tell about our planet help us tell different ones—and even help us save it?
What's a Slow Read? It's just like it sounds: we'll spend the semester slowly reading a book together. We'll do some other reading and some writing, too. No previous experience or expertise is required. Any student interested in science, writing, literature, and/or our planet is welcome.
