Poster featuring five readers of the Handwerker Series

The Department of Writing presents the second Handwerker Student Reading of the academic year this Wednesday, December 4 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Handwerker Gallery (located on the first floor in Gannett Center, below the library).

Join us to celebrate these five featured student writers:

Bailey Bramer is a second year writing major and art minor. Her work has been featured in Cornell's DECODE-IT series and the Ithaca College Writing Contest. She works for the Writing Center, Stillwater Magazine , and The Graphic Novel Advisory Board, and is an assistant student director for the New Voices Literary Festival. When not staring at her computer for school, Bailey enjoys staring at her computer to play video games. She also likes hiking, bird watching, and swimming as well as her most shocking hobby: reading.

Thalia Peters, or TJ, is a senior writing major whose work has been featured in the F. Scott Fitzgerald Literary Festival and the 2024 Ithaca College Writing Contest. She uses writing to explore themes of alienation, identity, connection, and grief through a surreal speculative horror lens, and on rare occasions she even does it well. If you’re ever desperate to hear a hot take about the beat poets, you can find her performing with her a cappella group IC Tone Cold, falling over in mosh pits, or staring off into a middle distance thinking about aliens.

Ashan Anthonisz-Chandrasena is a Junior, majoring in Politics with minors in Writing, Education Studies, and Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies. His writing has appeared in Sri Lankan publications like The Sunday Times and Community.lk. On campus, Ashan is actively involved as a Peer Ambassador for H & S Pathways, Peer Career Advisor for the Career Center, Peer Leader for the Office of Student Success, and Fiction Copy Editor for Stillwater Magazine , alongside rowing for the Ithaca Men’s team. An aspiring author, his work draws on everyday life, influenced by music, films, and anime. Outside academics and writing, he enjoys reading, gaming, drawing, and cooking.

Kip Marshall (she/he) is a second-year writing major with big dreams and many in-progress projects. She is a bigender trans woman who pulls a lot of inspiration from her own life and her own experiences, such as her relationship with her ADHD. Although she primarily writes fiction pieces like her own Trinity Trials and Mindful Self-Indulgence, she also writes poetry and hopes to publish a compilation called Hard Pills to Swallow in the coming year or two under the pen name Luna M. Borne. Kip is excited for this opportunity to share her work and hopes you’re excited too.

Catherine Plizga goes by many names, including but not limited to: Cathy, Catie, Cate, Cath, Cat, and C-Dog. Catherine is a third-year writing major with minors in English and education. Cathy is working towards becoming an English and writing teacher as well as a published author. Catie has experience teaching writing at a summer camp in 2024 as well as in a kindergarten class last semester. Cate also currently holds a position on the Graphic Novel Advisory board. Cath loves to write fiction, particularly science fiction, fantasy, and horror, but also enjoys writing poetry from time to time.
