New Process for Third-Party Apps in Microsoft Teams, Effective January 8th

By Lisa Efing-Guida, December 20, 2024

New Review Process for Installing Teams Apps

As part of ongoing efforts to protect the privacy and security of students, faculty, and staff data at Ithaca College, access to third-party apps in Microsoft Teams will be limited, starting January 8, 2025 . Only third-party applications approved by Ithaca College, including Microsoft-published apps, will be available by default. Additional app requests will need approval from Information Technology and Analytics (IT&A).

What is a Third-Party Application in Teams?

Third-party apps in Microsoft Teams are applications developed by external vendors and integrated within Teams. While these apps can offer useful features, they may also pose risks to your data and Ithaca College’s data. For instance, some apps might store, access, or use data from your Ithaca College account or meetings for their own purpose without adequate data privacy protections.

How to Request an App

If you need to use a third-party app that is not already available, you can request an application by filling out this form: Request for Application Integration. To ensure a smooth review process, please provide the following details:

  • Name and description of the app
  • Purpose and benefit of using the app
  • Alternatives considered
  • Number of users who will use the app (individual, department, etc.)
  • App publisher’s website for privacy policy and terms of service

The Information Technology and Analytics team will review and evaluate the application based on the considerations below.

  • Check if the developer is verified by Microsoft
  • Review terms including security measures and compliance
  • Evaluate data security and how the app protects your data
  • Review how data is collected, used, shared, and how access is controlled
  • Ensure the app only has permissions to what it needs to function
  • Check for conflicts or duplication of approved alternative apps
  • Evaluate developer support, update frequency, and documentation
  • Consider the use case and benefit for the Ithaca College community

For further details please visit our IT&A knowledge base article: Application Integration Considerations

After review, you will receive a notification via an IT Service Desk ticket with the outcome. Approved apps will be made available to the campus community. If a request is denied, we’ll provide feedback and suggest alternatives when possible.
