About the Cortaca Licensing Program

In the summer of 2012 Ithaca College and SUNY Cortland began a licensing and trademark enforcement program for the Cortaca Jug football game. The two schools, participants in the annual football game, became co-owners of the registered trademark “Cortaca.”

Any vendor creating merchandise (apparel, bags, writing utensils, mugs, etc.) bearing the protected term “Cortaca,” whether for on-campus departments or organizations, or for third-party vendors to sell in stores, must apply and be approved as an official licensee by both Ithaca College and SUNY Cortland. Upon being licensed, all designs for merchandise being created must be submitted for approval before production begins.

The registered trademark also extends to non-merchandise use of the protected term, such as in songs or films.

Ithaca College and SUNY Cortland Licensing Process

Any person, business or organization desiring to use the “Cortaca” trademark on merchandise for sale must be licensed to do so. Interested parties will work with Ithaca College and SUNY Cortland by following the process outlined below.

Submit Vendor Application Form: To be approved as an official licensee for the creation and distribution of merchandise bearing the Cortaca name, a vendor application form must be completed and submitted. After the online form is submitted, Ithaca College and SUNY Cortland will review the application and make a decision on whether or not to approve the applicant.

Official Licensee Decision Notification: Both Ithaca College and SUNY Cortland will review the application within five business days of its receipt. The applicant will be notified of the approval decision via e-mail.

Design and Product Proposal: Once a vendor has been approved as an official license, the licensee may proceed with the process by completing and submitting the design and product proposal form, which details the specific merchandise the vendor intends to create and distribute using the Cortaca trademark. Once the form is submitted, both Ithaca College and SUNY Cortland will review the proposal and respond accordingly within three business days. If approval of the proposal is granted, the production phase may begin.

Cortaca Licensed Vendors

Only licensed vendors may be used to produce merchandise bearing the "Cortaca" trademark. Due to the time associated with application, you may find it easier to work with a vendor that is already licensed for the Cortaca program.

Applications for vendors to become official licensees to produce Cortaca merchandise
- Restricted License should be used for all vendors producing merchandise to fulfill internal orders from departments within the Ithaca College and SUNY Cortland campuses, as well as vendors in Tompkins and Cortland counties. All other vendors should complete the Standard License.
- Vendors who are already licensed through the Ithaca College licensing program will only need to complete the Add-A-School request and indicate you want to add the Cortaca contract type.

All merchandise produced through this process must contain the "officially licensed collegiate product" label on the item or packaging. Licensed vendors will receive this label and instructions for use when they become licensed.
