The Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen series at Ithaca College will show the documentary “Reel in the Closet” on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The 6 p.m. screening in Textor 103 is free and open to the public.
“Reel in the Closet” tells the story of a film tech who discovers the real lives of queer people in the past by restoring hundreds of never-before-seen home movies dating back to the 1930s. It is a fascinating, intimate survey of lives lived within and also outside the pages of history, and a reminder that LGBT people lived full lives, even as society ignored, persecuted and discriminated against them. But time is running out to save what’s left before the films are destroyed by unknowing or unaccepting families of those who made them.
The Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen series is sponsored by the Ithaca College Center for LGBT Education, Outreach and Services. For more information, visit www.ithaca.edu/lgbt.
