“Disney’s Newsies” is an electrifying adaptation of Disney’s 1992 film that delves into the newsboys’ strike of 1899 in the heart of New York City. At its core, it follows the charismatic Jack Kelly and a band of scrappy young newsboys who take a stand against powerful newspaper magnates like Joseph Pulitzer. When Pulitzer raises the price of newspapers, cutting into their meager earnings, these newsies channel their frustration into a fervent uprising. With unity and an unwavering belief in their cause, they rally more newsies to their side, including the steadfast Davey and his younger brother Les.
“When I was asked if I wanted to direct ‘Disney’s Newsies,’ my initial thought was, ‘How fun!’ Then I did as one of my teachers, the legendary director Lloyd Richards, would remind us to do. Research every aspect of the play,” says director Cynthia Henderson. “Yes, ‘Newsies’ is a musical, but at its core it is first and foremost a play, a story, a moment in the life of a group of ordinary people who had to find their way through an extraordinary set of circumstances.”
Newsies is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com
