Community, excellence, and achievement dominated the celebration

Commencement is the day a college student dreams about—a regalia filled ritual at the end of an academic journey to mark years of work, discovery, and accomplishment. It also serves as an opportunity to reflect on that journey and start to determine what they will take with them: what was it that changed and transformed them into the person donning a mortarboard and crossing a stage to get a fist bump from a grinning President Cornish?

Three themes came through loud and clear from the Class of 2025: Community, Excellence and Achievement.

Here are sights, sounds, and quotes from the day. There are also links to the College’s photo album and Instagram and Facebook pages, where you can see more of the day we celebrated with pride and joyous affection.

Community

Community emerged throughout Commencement. From reflections by our students on what shaped their IC experience to words from our esteemed speakers, community rose to the top of what it means to be an IC student and alumnus:

Jasmine Williams '25 was selected by her peers to be the student speaker.. As Jasmine settled at the podium, her words offered homage to the pride and future of community:

“Whether you recognize the person next to you or not, we are connected. We are connected through the uncertainty of COVID, through the whirlwind of our early twenties, through the bitter winters that felt like they’d never end, through the joy of being the class of 2025. That connectedness does not go away once we’ve moved the tassels.”

The incredible range of our alumni network was demonstrated by David Muir ’95,ABC World News Tonight anchor, who returned to campus to share in Disney CEO Bob Iger’s ‘73 moment of being awarded an honorary Doctorate of Letters degree:

“So obviously you know my career is driven by breaking news and it takes me along this incredible journey since leaving Ithaca College here so many years ago. My visit here today is driven by two things. Obviously the energy of all of you in this room, your families who love you and have helped you get to this moment, your loved ones. And I'm here obviously, for my friend and mentor, fellow Ithaca College alum Bob Iger. When I learned he was going to be here in person to celebrate all of you, to make sure that he was here to celebrate what your parents have done to get you here, we haven't forgotten what it takes for these families that they too are responsible for this day as well. The professors, teachers, your peers and friends you will carry for the rest of your life.”

After the ceremony, students spoke of the community of their professors and fellow graduates:

“I’ll miss the connections with my professors. They care about you as an individual and they’re all about creating connections with shared experiences. It shows they want to take that extra step to preparing us for our careers.” Hannah Ashcraft, Legal Studies

“I can say the one word that describes my time at IC is 'community'. I found a lot of people I was able to create a really strong bond with and work together really well with.” Johanna Tackitt, Theatre Production and Design

Parents and family members hope their students find community when they leave home to embark on college careers. At Commencement, they articulated that their grads had found it:

“The athletic community here is very tight-knit. Because of that, Darren has formed bonds that will last a lifetime. He’s still friends with the teammates who were his roommates on his first day here. " -Kristie Brunner, mother of Darren Brunner, Business Administration

“My son played lacrosse, and I loved going to the games and meeting all these other lacrosse moms. We became a family watching our sons get close with each other.” Francesca Gillam, mother of Michael Gillam, Business Administration

Excellence

Excellence is something members of the Class of ’25 have learned to discover in themselves: excellence in the academic programs they joined, in what they could demand of themselves, and in what to take into the world with them.

In her commencement address, Jasmine Williams encouraged her peers lean on each other and the people in the room to help them maintain their excellence: “Look at them and trust that your excellence does not have to stand on its own. You’re sitting in a room of over a thousand excellent scholars and in them you have a home. Lean on us. We will carry you when you need rest. We will celebrate you. We will remind you of your why.”

“One word to describe my experience at IC … it felt authentic. The professors and the learning experiences felt authentic. Using the top-of-the-line equipment felt like learning an authentic version of TV. And I always felt comfortable coming back to professors I’d had classes with in other semesters for tips and advice.”  Owen Donahue, Television and Digital Media Production

“I am most thankful for the experiences I’ve had here at IC and what I’ve learned about myself. I’ve realized that I’m capable and talented enough to do all that the things that I dreamed of.” - Lukas Kauffman, Television and Digital Media Production

“My time at IC could be described in the word ‘rigorous.’ It's been a tough workload. It started out tough and it totally got tougher, but I've got a lot of good takeaways. I learned a lot. I think I’m a better person. It says a lot about just how rigorous the program and the school is.” - Ruari Maloney, Clinical Health Studies

Achievement

Achievement is what we all know commencement recognizes. There is the personal achievement to endure academic rigor and earn a college degree. There is also the achievement in realizing that dream and knowing there are more to come.

Bob Iger shared some wisdom after being awarded his honarary degree:

“Have dreams. And if they do not come true, have others. My dream graduating college was to be a network news anchor person. David Muir fulfilled that dream. I did not. But I developed another dream. I wanted to become a television production executive. I can check that box. I did that. It's a lesson. Have dreams and if they don't come true, create new ones. To all of you, remain hopeful and always optimistic. Those traits will fuel you. I promise. And they will create opportunities.”

Family Celebrates Graduation

Students reflected on their achievements, and families shared in:

“I’ve developed a lot of interests that I likely wouldn’t have elsewhere because there’s a lot of opportunity to find aspects of yourself that you wouldn’t otherwise. I got into philosophy and environmental sciences. I got a chance to explore a lot of sides to myself that I wouldn’t have if I had gone to a different college” - Will Moore, Mathematics

“Its been amazing. We were looking for a school that was a place where she could spend the next four years maturing in a less pressured environment in lovely natural surroundings. It was a hard search process because she was impacted by the pandemic and rattled about what direction she wanted to go with her life. We wound up with Ithaca, and it’s been everything we hope a college experience would have been”. -Katherine Brodie, mother of Kristen Brodie, Public and Community Health

“I’m proud that she’s already achieved so much and is already using everything she’s learned in her classes at Ithaca College to help the community and those in need. She works with the Youth Bureau now. I’m really proud of her for not only obtaining her education, but all that she’s done for the community.” Lisa Spontak, mother of Hannah Pond, Psychology
