The Annual James J. Whalen Academic Symposium provides a forum for students, faculty, and the community to discuss cutting edge research topics and to examine the connection between research and education. The Symposium includes poster, presentation and creative (visual, media and performing arts) sessions by students from all academic disciplines.
All Ithaca College students involved in research, scholarship, and creativity are encouraged to apply and those not yet involved will discover that attending the Symposium is a great way to learn about the broad range of opportunities available at IC. In 2018, over 300 students participated in the Symposium supported by over 150 faculty sponsors.
The Symposium is open to all students, with separate categories for undergraduate and graduate students, and provides the opportunity to present research either as an oral presentation, poster format, or a creative piece. Participants are encouraged to present results from their current research projects, even if it is preliminary research, as these presentations provide the student researcher the opportunity to discuss their research with other participants and faculty. In addition, the Symposium provides a venue for the exposure of student research to the broader IC community.
The Symposium includes projects from all disciplines and encourages interdisciplinary discourse, allowing students to learn from each other about a broad range of exciting research topics. In addition, students can include their presentations on resumes and graduate school applications.
