Writing Minor

The 21-credit minor in writing is an excellent complement to a degree in any other field. Students in this minor come from all five schools at the College and represent a wide variety of majors.

General Requirements

For students who matriculated at Ithaca College in Fall 2014 and later, all writing minors take Argument. Minors must then take one of these three courses: Personal Essay OR Writing for the Workplace OR Creative Nonfiction. Five additional courses (or 15 credits) complete the minor. Of these five, two (6 credits) must be at the 300 level. Only two courses at the 100 level may count toward the writing minor.

Students who matriculated before Fall 2014 should check the catalog for the academic year that they started at Ithaca College. Your catalog year is listed on your Student Information page on HomerConnect. The catalog for that academic year will show the Writing minor requirements that apply to you.

Other Opportunities

Seniors who qualify may propose independent studies or serve as an apprentice to a professor in a first-year writing course. Also, for students with the appropriate preparatory courses, credit-bearing internships are available locally during the academic year. The department also sponsors a credit-bearing summer internship program in writing and publishing at both national and local sites, as well as at the London Center. Internships are in journalism, publishing, public relations, and writing for corporate and non-profit organizations.
