Special Programs

Unique programs offered occasionally in conjunction with the Center for Life Skills.

Headstart/CLS Intergenerational Program

The preschoolers from Headstart and our participants engage in activities that promote socialization, gross and fine motor skills, cognitive, and psychosocial development. Together, we enjoy making crafts, engaging in horticulture programs, making valentines, singing, using balance games, story telling and making puppets. This intergenerational program is facilitated by occupational therapy, speech therapy and (formerly) therapeutic recreation students and faculty.

Aquatics Therapy Program

The purpose of the aquatics program is to introduce participants to safe methods for resumption or initiation of aquatic activities to achieve and maintain fitness. Upon achievement of safe independence in the pool, individuals are introduced to aquatic facilities that will continue to be available to them when they leave the Center for Life Skills. Our focus is to establish a manner and the habit for participants to enjoy safe active participation in their own community. This program is established on a semester by semester basis, determined by interest level and need of the participants.

Each session includes:

  • Warm-up exercises
  • Exercises to develop dynamic standing balance, skill in managing body position in the water, endurance or tolerance for activity
  • Water safety skills
  • Cool down with stretching
