Dr. Aptekar will discuss how Immigrants have worked for the US military since its beginnings, regardless of US citizenship status. Today, the US military actively recruit immigrants, even as its disruption of communities across the world pushes people to migrate. Drawing on an interview-based study of non-citizens who enlisted in the US military,Aptekaranalyzes the complex reasons that immigrants enlist and how citizenship status or its lack shapes their time in the military and after they separate. She addresses the role of transnational militarism, warrior masculinities, and racialization.
