The goal of this research team is to understand how judgments of responsibility for disease onset influence disease management. For example, diabetes has certain life-style risk factors, including sedentary lifestyle and improper diet, which can impact a person’s perceived responsibility for their own disease onset. If people perceive themselves to be responsible for the onset of their diabetes, how does that affect their overall disease management? Since diabetes disproportionately affects members of Native American, African American, Latino/a, Asian American and Native Hawaiian groups, it is important to examine the different effects of perceived responsibility among these groups. Ultimately, the team will design and implement interventions based on these models of perceived responsibility in order to help people better manage their diabetes.
