Eric Machan Howd graduated from Ithaca College in 1990 as an English literature major and writing minor. One of three alumni to eventually teach in the writing department, Howd has specialized in teaching professional writing for the past 23 years. But his path has also included technical and academic writing, as well as poetry.
In January 2022, Howd moved from his role as assistant professor to director of the office of extended studies at Ithaca College. He now manages the summer and winter course offerings and programs for pre-college high school students, certificates, and international exchanges.
Of his transition, Howd says: “I realized all the different jobs I’ve had have been working to open people’s minds to different things. As an administrator, I’m still helping people learn—whether they are my colleagues or students.”
One constant over the years has been the connection between writing professors and students. “At IC, we have a relatively small ratio between teacher and class,” Howd says. “You’re not sitting in a lecture hall; you have twenty-four people or fewer. It gives you that individualized experience with professors.”
Howd encourages the study of writing for all students: “Writing as a major or a minor is important not only because it opens your creative side, but it will help you in internships and future jobs. I think writing education is something we need more of in this world.”
