I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. After receiving my undergraduate degree from Oberlin College (1981), I moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia to pursue graduate work in exercise physiology. After graduating from Dalhousie University in 1983 with my Master's degree, I returned to New York City where I worked at The McBurney School, teaching health and physical education and coaching high school students. After several years, I returned to school, and graduated in 1989 with my physical therapy degree from Ithaca College. In May 2006, I graduated with my Ph.D. in Health Related Sciences from Virginia Commonwealth University.
