1. Between your left hand
outstretched to the sky
and your right foot
toeing the earth
extends a string.
Between your left knee
bent before the altar
and your right hand
fingering a glass of wine
extends a string.
Between the inverted bowl of your brain
and the full cup of your sex
there also extends a string.
Where all these strings meet:
the knot, the music.

2. Consider the foolish bird:
while the sun shines blissfully overhead
it hops constantly across the field
scratching at the earth for worms
pecking dead wood for bugs
keeping watch for cats in the bushes.
Look at its eyes,
it is always nervous.
Now: what do you have in your pockets
and where are your wings?
