SLPG 55900 - Speech Sound Disorders in Children (Spring)
The study of disordered speech sound production in children. Topics include: typical speech sound acquisition, articulation, phonology, the relationships between speech sound disorders and literacy, cultural-linguistic variations in speech production, and characteristics of speech sound disorders across different clinical populations. Evidence-based approaches to assessment and treatment are emphasized.
SLPG 61000 - Early Intervention for Children with Communication Disorders (Spring)
Information is provided about development of normal and disordered communication in children from birth to three years of age. Course material includes information about important legislation, service delivery models, risk factors, assessment, intervention, needs of families, and specific populations of special-needs children. Information for providing early intervention services is provided from related disciplines such as occupational therapy and physical therapy.

Differential diagnosis and treatment of pediatric motor speech disorders including discussion of etiology, characteristics, and evidence-based interventions.
SLPG 63300 - Cultural Competence in Speech-Language Pathology Clinical Practice (Summer)
Summarize cultural competence across the full range of dimensions of diversity and clinical practice in speech-language pathology, including considerations of linguistic and cultural variation in communication and its impact on service delivery.
SLPG 64100 - Facilitating Spoken-Language Learning in Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children (Summer)
The course provides future speech-language pathologists with the knowledge and skills to facilitate spoken-language learning in deaf and hard-of-hearing children using the auditory-verbal approach. Course content elaborates on the auditory-verbal philosophy, guidelines for maximizing hearing and facilitating listening in the deaf and hard-of-hearing children, facilitating emerging literacy using auditory-verbal techniques, and working with families of deaf and hard-of-hearing children. The course assumes prior understanding of audiograms as well as amplification devices.
SLPA 11010 - Phonetics (Fall)
An introduction to the study of speech sounds used in the production of American English. Emphasis is placed on sound to symbol transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet, as well as development of transcription speed and accuracy. Anatomy and physiology of the speech mechanism are introduced for the purpose of describing speech sound production.
SLPA 20800 - Perspectives on Deafness (Fall)
Examination of disability perspectives and alternatives to disability perspectives on deafness in the US. Discussion of issues related to child development (e.g., development of speech, language, and literacy) from an educational perspective. Discussion of intervention from an audiological perspective. Discussion of controversies inside and outside the deaf community related to educational and clinical interventions.
SLPA 23500 - Langauge and Speech Sound Disorders (Spring)
Exploration of developmental speech and language disorders, including comparison of typical and disordered development. Identify, critically evaluate, and apply evidence-based practices in speech and language assessment and intervention, using clinical case studies.
EDU750 - Perspectives and Educational Implications of Audiology/Spoken English Development in ASL/English Bilingual Education; co-taught with Dr. Gloria Nathanson, AuD (Summer, Online/Hybrid)
Theories, research, methods, and perspectives pertaining to the development of auditory/oral skills in deaf and hard of hearing children and youth. Knowledge of the development, improvement, and /or maintenance of auditory/oral skills in an interdisciplinary bilingual educational environment.
