Gladys M. Varona-Lacey teaches Spanish and Latin American Literature in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Ithaca College. She earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literatures and a Certificate in Latin American Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. She teaches all levels of Spanish language courses as well as Latin American literature, her specialty. Professor Varona-Lacey has authored and edited several books in her field and has taught at M.I.T., Tufts University, Boston University, and Harvard University. Among her recent publications is “El rescate de una adolescencia cubana a través del recuerdo. Un estudio de Nieve en La Habana de Carlos Eire” in Cuba: Arte y literatura en el exilio (2011). 

Professor Varona-Lacey has chaired her department, co-directed the Latin American Studies minor, and served as a member of the College Board’s AP Higher Education Advisory Committee. She is General Editor of Peter Lang Publishing’s Latin America: Interdisciplinary Studies series, co-directs Ithaca College’s Certificate Program in International Business, and served as a member of the IES Curriculum Committee. In May 2011 she was awarded the Faculty Excellence Award. Professor Varona-Lacey served the Town of Danby, New York, as an elected board member from 2000 to 2008.
