The Park Center for Independent Media presents:

Modern Day Threats to Journalists

PCIM will host the Freedom of the Press Foundation at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 19 in the Park Hall Auditorium. Parker Higgins, Director of Advocacy, will discuss how the non-profit organization protects, defends, and empowers public-interest journalism in the 21st century.

FPF works to preserve and strengthen First and Fourth Amendment rights guaranteed to the press through a variety of avenues, including the development of encryption tools, documentation of attacks on the press, training newsrooms on digital security practices, and advocating for the public’s right to know. The organization manages SecureDrop an open-source whistleblower submission system that media organizations and NGOs can install to securely accept documents from anonymous sources. As well, they maintain the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker in partnership with more than two dozen press freedom groups to create a centralized repository for research. The data that is gathered by the tracker helps inform advocacy, journalism, and legal action.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information contact the Park Center for Independent Media bhawley@ithaca.edu, (607) 274-3590, Park Room 258
