Dr. Luis E. Loubriel, a versatile musician, educator, and researcher specializing in brass performance and pedagogy, has been a strong advocate for music education and performance studies throughout his academic career. He is dedicated to establishing dynamic learning environments for emerging artists and educators.
Prior to his appointment at Ithaca College, he held the position of Department Chair and Program Director for the Department of Music at Benedictine University in Illinois for 15 years. During this time, he provided leadership in recruiting a diverse and talented faculty, secured funding to expand music facilities, created new music programs, and enhanced student recruitment and success. He also served as Chair of the University Wide Rank and Tenure Committee at the same institution and achieved the rank of Full Professor of Music with tenure.
He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and his M.M. and B.M. degrees from Northwestern University. As a recipient of the prestigious Patricia Roberts Harris Fellowship at the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis and the Illinois Consortium for Educational Opportunity Program Fellowship (ICEOP) at the University of Illinois, he demonstrated his commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education.
Initiating his musical career as a trumpeter at the age of sixteen, Dr. Loubriel became a member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 555. He performed with orchestras and chamber ensembles, including the Festival Casals Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Aspen Music Festival Orchestra, the Artie Shaw Orchestra, the Millar Brass Ensemble, and the Canadian Brass Quintet. His main instrumental teachers and mentors included Vincent Cichowicz, Manny Laureano, William Scarlett, Armando Ghitalla, Ray Sasaki, and Arnold Jacobs.
Beyond his performance career, he served as a music radio programmer and producer, contributing to iconic programs—such as the Studs Terkel Programand the Jazz Image with Leigh Kamman—at WFMT Radio in Chicago and in Minnesota Public Radio. In 2006, he founded Scholar Publications, publishing several influential books on brass performance and pedagogy and collaborating with prominent instrumental artists from around the globe. His commitment to advancing the field is further demonstrated through numerous articles, including those for the International Trumpet Guild, the Forum on Public Policy, and the Journal of Integral Theory and Practice.
