You will join a cohort of approximately 20-25 students to begin your program in late May and continue through late June of the following year. Hands-on field experiences in varied school and community settings begin from your first summer in the program.
Adolescence Education, M.A.T.
Learn how to design an effective curriculum that promotes social justice-based educational practices for teaching in a grade 7-12 classroom. In our 13-month intensive master's degree program, you will complete 36-credits of coursework that leads to initial teaching certification in Adolescence Education for grades 7-12 in New York State.
The master's degree in teaching is designed to support you in focusing on a content area of interest - including biology, chemistry, English, French, mathematics, Physics, social studies, or Spanish.
- Begin the graduate program one summer and be fully eligible for graduation, initial certification, and a teaching position by the following summer. Our intensive, 13-month program (late May through late June of the following year) is approved by and registered with the New York State Education Department.
- Access to graduate assistantships and scholarships to offset the cost of attendance, including generous financial support via the New York State Math and Science Teaching Initiatives and the Robert Noyce Teaching Scholarship for those in STEM-related disciplines.
- Pursue your studies in small class sizes, which allow for academic, research, and community-based collaborations among faculty and students.
- Participate in field experiences in multiple, diverse sites, including our partnership school in Harlem, NY.
- Complete a teacher inquiry project prior to graduation.
- Benefit from certification reciprocity agreements with more than 30 other states and jurisdictions.
- Be employed, likely prior to graduation. Our graduates teach in rural, urban, and suburban school districts in New York, surrounding states, and around the country (for instance, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, North Carolina, and Virginia).
Education and discipline-specific course requirements to complete prior to enrollment.
Courses you will complete to prepare for a teaching career during the intensive 13-month master's degree.

“Ithaca College's M.A.T. program in adolescence education gave me various opportunities to work with diverse student populations. These experiences have helped me transition from a graduate student into a successful beginning teacher."
