Financial support for experiential learning in mathematics

An anonymous donor initiated an endowment at Ithaca College to support mathematical research and experiential learning activities.  Due to the generosity of this donor's ongoing support and the generous contributions from alumni, faculty, staff, and other supporters, the math department provides students funding to engage in mathematics activities outside the classroom.

To apply for funds, please review the guidelines and complete an application.

To donate to the fund, please contact mathchair@ithaca.edu.

Research Opportunities at Ithaca College

Junior Seminar & Research Experience in Math - This course sequence (MATH 39700-MATH 39810) provides an introduction to research in math and is typically done in your junior year.

Capstone in Mathematics - This course sequence (MATH 49800 & Math 49900) has students reflect upon the field of mathematics via an integrative project developed in concert with a faculty mentor.

H&S Summer Scholars Program - Each year, students are eligible to apply for funding to complete research with math faculty during the summer in Ithaca.  This is a paid research experience that occurs over a period of 8-10 weeks and includes on-campus social activities.  Applications are typically due by the second Monday of February.  Talk with a Math faculty member and begin planning a project in fall for the following summer!  For more information and to apply, see the H&S Summer Scholars Program page.

The Whalen Academic Symposium - The James J. Whalen Academic Symposium is an annual Ithaca College tradition that invites students to present their mentored research and other creative works in a professional setting.

Opportunities Beyond Ithaca College

Research Experiences for Undergraduates - Every summer, the National Science Foundation funds Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) at many universities around the U.S.  There are many in mathematics and other fields.  These are paid research experiences of 8-10 weeks that usually include travel costs and may include room and board.  Applications are typically due in February or March.

Summer Internship Opportunities - Corporations and agencies offer many internships for undergraduates.

Study Abroad - If you are looking for a semester of intensive mathematical studies, you should consider one of the following opportunities or visit the Ithaca College Study Abroad office.

Mathematics Conference for Undergraduates - There are many conferences that feature presentations by undergraduate mathematics majors.  Ithaca College can help offset the cost of travel and presenting.  Examples:

  • Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference
  • National Conferences on Undergraduate Research
  • Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics
  • AMS/MAA Joint Mathematics Meeting
  • Mathfest
  • Seaway Section of the MAA

Other Ways to Be Involved

We have a Pi Mu Epsilon chapter and an active Math Club. Many of our majors will work as TA helping faculty with a course and providing tutoring for students. You can collaborate with other students in the COMAP Mathematical Contest in Modeling and compete in the Mathematical Association of America's William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition.
