Rashad G. Richardson “I Can Achieve” Memorial Scholarship

The Rashad G. Richardson "I Can Achieve" Memorial Scholarship is intended to recognize select students who exemplify leadership in programs with the BIPOC Unity Center or other programs across campus.  The ideal candidate will have made significant contributions toward improving the quality of life for BIPOC youth (K-12) in the Tompkins County community, their local community, or through a national organization dedicated to supporting BIPOC youth.

This award honors Rashad Galen (Gaylen) Richardson, who passed away in 2001 as a result of a school accident at the young age of 12 years old. He was a good-natured kid with an infectious, winning smile who loved to hang out with his friends and attend the after-school program at the Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC) here in our local community. Being a good citizen mattered to young Rashad. He was a middle school National Junior Honor Society student, a gifted athlete, and a community service volunteer. The Rashad G. Richardson “I Can Achieve” Memorial Scholarship, here at Ithaca College celebrates the legacy of a bright and shining star.

Only students returning for the 2024-2025 academic year as full-time undergraduate students are eligible. Any questions about financial aid packaging should be directed to the Office of Student Financial Services

All additional questions, concerns, and comments should be directed to Cliff-Simon Vital in the BIPOC Unity Center at cvital@ithaca.edu, or stop by (Suite 339, 3rd floor of Campus Center, Egbert Hall). We look forward to reviewing your submissions!

Aysia Louis

AL AL

My name is Aysia Louis, and I am a junior Occupational Therapy major from Ithaca, New York. Being a kid in a smaller town, I always jumped at the opportunity to have a fun time; whether it was playing on a sports team or going on a field trip with my afterschool program. As I have gotten older and came to college, I realized how much of an impact those activities and events had on my development and who I am today. With that in mind, I always try to give back to the community that has given so much to me, by helping provide kids with the same opportunities I had and more. During my summers here in Ithaca, I work at the Rashad Richardson Summer League, which is a seasonal basketball league for younger children all the way to age 18. A large part of Occupational Therapy is finding meaning in activity, and being a part of organizations who strive to provide access to activities for children is extremely fulfilling, while also preparing me for what my career as an Occupational Therapist may look like.

"Receiving this scholarship has not only relieved a financial burden, but given me the confidence that my work does not go unrecognized, and the push to keep striving to make change in my community and beyond. I am extremely grateful for your generosity, thank you for choosing to believe in me."
