Ithaca is renowned for its gorges, which serve as one of the area’s primary attractions and a must-see for visitors. However, it is important to recognize the potential dangers associated with these natural features, including the fact that swimming in Ithaca’s gorges is prohibited. Over the years, numerous individuals have suffered serious injuries or fatalities while swimming or jumping from significant heights into the gorges. These activities are inherently dangerous and can result in tragic outcomes that are entirely preventable. Even the most skilled swimmers face the risk of being pulled under by strong currents, while those attempting high jumps or dives risk slips, falls, or improper landings on rocks or in the water.

While no gorges are directly located on the Ithaca College campus, the IC Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management takes this opportunity to inform students of these risks and to encourage responsible alternatives, such as exploring the many designated hiking and walking trails that surround the gorges.

We urge all individuals to exercise caution when exploring the gorges. Safe enjoyment of these natural landmarks is possible by adhering to designated trails, respecting fence lines, and following all posted safety signs and warnings.
