Helpful resources can be found in the Complainant and Respondent Brochures available below. Some strategies to help include:
- Listen: Practice active listening skills by reflecting what they tell you and offering support.
- Let them Lead the Conversation: Allow them to determine the pace and focus of the conversation.
- Avoid Asking Questions: Do not ask them judgmental questions or make judgmental statements. Avoid "why" questions whenever possible.
- Take Care of Yourself: Know and respect your own boundaries. Seek support from resources on and off campus for yourself. Let the person know how much and what kind of support you're able to give.
- Access Support: You can submit an ICARE referral for them. You can help them explore support options on and off campus. Look at the Complainant Brochure or Respondent Brochure for a list of available resources. For immediate support or in the case of an emergency contact Public Safety at (607) 274-3333.
- Remain Neutral: Your focus should be on support, not taking sides or placing blame.
- Respect Privacy: Don't share the person's experience with others or speculate about what may have occurred.
- Educate Yourself: Sexual and Dating Violence are incredibly complex issues. Increasing your own understanding and awareness may help you to process your own feelings about the alleged incident, as well as assist the person with the process that may be ahead.
