Safety Training

PREFACE

All students working in the shops and theatre spaces of the Ithaca College Center for Theatre and Dance shall be trained to recognize workplace hazards and to prevent accidents in the workplace.  Students working in the shops and theatre spaces fall into two categories:

  • Theatre Production & Design Majors:  students enrolled in the B.F.A. in Theatre Production & Design.  These students participate in a production assignment each semester of their undergraduate program.  These students shall receive safety training as part of their regular course load.  These students shall also receive job-specific safety training as part of the curriculum of the Theatre Production courses.
  • Students Enrolled in Technical Theatre Practicum:  students enrolled in other degree programs (not Theatre Production & Design) who are working as part of a production crew.  This crew assignment is a requirement of the Technical Theatre Practicum course.  These students shall receive job-specific safety training as part of the curriculum of Technical Theatre Practicum.

SAFETY TRAINING

Safety training shall be administered by a member of the Theatre Production & Design (TP&D) faculty or staff.  Safety training which is not required to be administered by an OSHA-compliant Competent Person may be administered by a student trained as a trainer by a member of the TP&D faculty or staff.  Some aspects of training are administered solely on an as-needed basis; other aspects of training are administered to all TP&D majors and Technical Theatre Practicum students.

All safety training shall be documented, recorded, and retained for a period of at least four years by the faculty and staff of the Theatre Production & Design area.

Unless otherwise indicated, training areas conducted as part of the curriculum of Theatre Production (for TP&D majors) and Technical Theatre Practicum (for non-TP&D majors) shall be conducted by the following personnel (referred to in this document as the area mentors) or their trained and approved designate(s):

  • Lighting and Sound Areas:  Lighting and Sound Shop Supervisor.
  • Carpentry and Properties Areas:  Faculty Technical Director or Scene Shop Supervisor.
  • Scenic Art Area:  Scenic Art Mentor.
  • Costume Area:  Costume Shop Supervisor or Costume Design Mentor.

Training received in other classes shall be indicated in the training area.
